Reading Comprehension
with Audra Eckes
Ages: 7 - 10
Depending on the pace/comfort of the class, we will cover several reading comprehension topics, including, but not limited to, some of the following: introduction to genres and different approaches to reading/reading with a purpose; fiction or nonfiction, how to tell the difference; text features of non-fiction; main idea vs. supporting details of a text; identifying and using time, sequence, and cause/effect language; predicting; retelling; identifying story elements such as characters, setting, plot; comparing and/or contrasting two or more texts written on the same topic; using graphic organizers; and facts vs. opinions. Good reading habits will be encouraged throughout our time together. Students should be able to read on at least a 2nd-grade level and be able to write or type a summarizing sentence or up to two short responses to questions presented about the passage that was read within 5 minutes, as well as be able to respond orally with at least short answers to presented questions during discussion. There will be homework.

Cursive
with Audra Eckes
Ages: 8 - 12
For new or continuing students. This class will be individualized to match the place and pace of each student. We will learn and/or review, then practice the formation of individual cursive letters - lower-case first then capitals (upper-case), with focus on each student being able to write their name in cursive. I’m hoping that connecting letter to letter will begin on the first day to include short words using letters that are formed similarly. We’ll be learning the updated Zaner-Bloser style of cursive handwriting. The letters slant to the right with the tail of each letter connecting to the tail of the next letter. It also has capital letters that are simplified. Students will also practice reading cursive. Parents: This is the updated style of the one that many of you grew up on in grade school. Fun fact: did you know that practicing cursive tends to improve print and overall fine motor skills as well as coordination?
**Daily practice/homework of about 5 minutes will be requested to help ensure adequate progress.**
From Paragraphs to Essays: Expanding Strong Writing Foundations
with Audra Eckes
Ages: 10 - 13
In this engaging class, students will embark on a transformative journey from crafting strong paragraphs to composing well-structured three-paragraph essays. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, learners will explore the essential elements of essay writing, including thesis statements, topic sentences, supporting details, and effective conclusions. Students will participate in peer reviews and workshops that foster collaboration and constructive feedback, enabling them to refine their writing skills. The goal, by the end of the course, is to have each student able to confidently articulate their ideas in a cohesive essay format, setting a solid foundation for future writing endeavors. Students need to already know how to form a strong paragraph and be ready or almost ready for essay writing. There will be homework and access to a computer and Google account at home will be necessary. Students will have the use of computers/Chromebooks in class. ELA 2 prior to or with this class would be beneficial to the students and is strongly encouraged.

In this class, students will read through and act out scripts. All of the same acting and characterization skills students would use for other theatre classes will still be required in this one. In using this strategy, students do not need to memorize their part. They need only to reread it several times and familiarize themselves with it, thus developing their fluency skills.
