This interdisciplinary course examines how environmental factors such as air and water quality, pollution, climate change, and urban design influence community health and disease patterns. Students explore the principles of epidemiology to understand how diseases spread and how environmental conditions shape public wellness. Integrating biology, environmental science, and social justice, the course empowers students to think critically about environmental challenges and their impacts on human health. Through fieldwork, data analysis, and community engagement, students will assess environmental risks, analyze real-world case studies, and design public health interventions. I do assign homework most weeks as this helps entrench learning. I want kids to remember what they learn! Especially because math is always building upon earlier concepts.

Do you love D&D? Maybe you like collecting miniatures. This class will teach you how to paint the really small and have it come out looking really good. We will cover the basics of miniature painting, but kids of all skill level are welcome.

Depending on the pace/comfort of the class, we will cover several reading comprehension topics, including, but not limited to, some of the following: introduction to genres and different approaches to reading/reading with a purpose; fiction or nonfiction, how to tell the difference; text features of non-fiction; main idea vs. supporting details of a text; identifying and using time, sequence, and cause/effect language; predicting; retelling; identifying story elements such as characters, setting, plot; comparing and/or contrasting two or more texts written on the same topic; using graphic organizers; and facts vs. opinions. Good reading habits will be encouraged throughout our time together. Students should be able to read on at least a 2nd-grade level and be able to write or type a summarizing sentence or up to two short responses to questions presented about the passage that was read within 5 minutes, as well as be able to respond orally with at least short answers to presented questions during discussion. There will be homework. It sounds like a serious and boring class, but we tend to have a good time.
