High School Chemistry - W1/2 *(Full)
with Jim Muller
Ages: 14 - 18
This class is a year-long class; this is not open for the spring.
Chemistry is the study of atoms and molecules and how they interact. This class is designed to give the students a firm understanding of basic chemistry concepts so that they will be well prepared if they wish to take a chemistry or biochemistry class in college. For the first part of the year, the students learn the “language” of chemistry. First, they will learn how to use the "alphabet" of chemistry: the periodic table. From there they will learn to create “words” with their "alphabet" by understanding how different atoms form molecules and how nomenclature is used to name those molecules. After that, they will finally begin to form sentences, which in chemistry is learning how to read, write, and balance chemical equations. Once we’ve learned the language, we will begin using it as we move on to stoichiometry, acids and bases, gas laws, and more. Hands-on activities and labs will be used to reinforce and enhance the concepts as the year goes on .Prerequisites: Students should have a very firm handle on Algebra 1. The more familiar a student is with math, the better they will do in this class.

The Writer's Toolbox: Grammar & Style - W2
with Seema Khan
Ages: 10 - 18
The focus of this class is on learning how to write good, powerful sentences. Students will practice crafting clear, engaging, and well-structured sentences through hands-on activities and frequent practice. Every great story starts with strong sentences, and mastering sentence craft leads to better paragraphs and more effective writing overall. Students will study and emulate strong, effective sentences from the Harry Potter universe, to internalize patterns and structures. They will explore how sentence structure, rhythm, word choice, and grammar rules create meaning and impact. Through sentence-composing exercises, students will manipulate words, clauses, and structures to see how small changes affect style, tone, and clarity. As they progress, students will apply more advanced grammar concepts to strengthen their sentences, gradually moving from simple constructions to complex, stylistically rich writing. By the end of the class, students will have a robust toolbox of strategies to write sentences with precision, flair, and impact, giving them the confidence and skill to craft compelling writing in any style or genre.
