This introductory Spanish course provides students with a foundation in basic vocabulary, grammar, and conversational skills. Students learn to read, write, speak, and understand simple Spanish through topics such as greetings, numbers, family, daily activities, and common expressions. The course also introduces elements of Spanish-speaking cultures to build cultural awareness. By the end of the course, students are able to form basic sentences, ask and answer simple questions, and communicate in everyday situations using present-tense verbs.

We will watch in-class and at home a number of contemporary musical theater productions from the last 30 years, discuss production trends and themes of this same period, and sing along. Titles will likely include: The Lion King, Hairspray, and Wicked. The final title list will be completed with consideration for students ages.

Executive Functions Part 1 (Foundations)

We will start our executive functions journey by learning about the power of positive thinking, including positive affirmations and the concept of “yet”. We will learn how setting SMART(ER) goals can help our focus and outcome. We will learn how to create and maintain good habits and routines. We will organize backpacks and put together a binder, including a student planner, for class (I can help with other classes as well). We will tie it all together by pairing all these with executive functions (a set of cognitive processes that are essential for controlling behavior and managing tasks, including for effective learning, decision-making, and self-regulation). Participation in class is required as is homework. Part 2 is offered as a separate semester-long class during which we will focus on the specific executive functions and how they apply to each of the students.

The class emphasizes observation, experimentation, and real-world connections to science. Students will keep a science notebook to record their findings and reinforce key vocabulary. This course is designed to build a strong foundation in biology while making science fun and interactive.

Light, Shadow, Legacy: Learning Photography from the Greats

In this class, we’ll explore the many genres of photography, from street and portrait to landscape, documentary, and more, while discovering the iconic photographers who helped shape each style. Along the way, we’ll break down the basics of photography, like exposure and composition, by studying the techniques these artists used to capture their most unforgettable images. Through hands-on projects, we’ll experiment with camera obscuras and cyanotypes, create our own photo zines, practice techniques in class, and learn through weekly photo assignments.
