Reading Comprehension Elementary - W3

Ages: 7 - 10
Depending on the pace/comfort of the class, we will cover several reading comprehension topics, including, but not limited to, some of the following: introduction to genres and different approaches to reading/reading with a purpose; fiction or nonfiction, how to tell the difference; text features of non-fiction; main idea vs. supporting details of a text; identifying and using time, sequence, and cause/effect language; predicting; retelling; identifying story elements such as characters, setting, plot; comparing and/or contrasting two or more texts written on the same topic; using graphic organizers; and facts vs. opinions. Good reading habits will be encouraged throughout our time together. Students should be able to read on at least a 2nd-grade level and be able to write or type a summarizing sentence or up to two short responses to questions presented about the passage that was read within 5 minutes, as well as be able to respond orally with at least short answers to presented questions during discussion. There will be homework. It sounds like a serious and boring class, but we tend to have a good time.
Retro Recess - W3

Unplug and play! Students will learn timeless games that spark imagination, encourage friendly competition, and bring the joy of recess back—just like generations before them. Discover and play the games your parents and grandparents loved, from tag to hopscotch, jacks to dominoes, hacky sack to yoyo. This class will be a great mix of both indoor and outdoor activities that can be played all year long.
Stem Stories: Earth Science - W3

In this class we will read stories about earth science and learn about the layers of the earth, plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, mountains, rocks and minerals, and the water cycle. We will create crafts and go outside to look for rocks and minerals.
Beginner Single Hand Fencing - W4

Ages: 10 - 18
Singlehand fencing for beginners class will cover the basics of sword fighting including footwork, defense, attacks, sparring and sportsmanship for this historical sport. weapons used will be foam no special gear required.
Engineering Adventures - W4

Step into the world of invention and discovery in this hands-on engineering class! Each week, students will tackle real-world design challenges—building bridges, simple machines, egg drop challenges, launching rockets, testing and building various structures, and more. While completing these projects, students will learn the underlying science and engineering concepts that make them work. They will explore energy, including different forms and how they are harnessed in engineering applications; force and motion, investigating Newton’s Laws and how forces affect the movement of objects; materials science, examining the properties of different materials and how they influence design choices; and structural stability, understanding the importance of balance and strength in building resilient structures. Using creativity, teamwork, and the Engineering Design Process, students will brainstorm, prototype, test, and refine their projects, learning how math, physics, and engineering principles turn ideas into real solutions. By the end of the class, they will understand the science behind engineering and experience the excitement of designing and building their own inventions.
Exploring Science Through Art - W4

Get ready to explore the world of science in this interdisciplinary course that blends creativity with scientific exploration. Students will engage in hands-on projects that bridge art and science, exploring how scientific principles can inspire artistic expression and vice versa. This hands-on class combines science and creativity through fun art experiments. Each project will explore basic science concepts like light, gravity, diffusion, ecology and more.
Metal Detecting - W4

Ages: 7 - 12
In this class we will learn how metal detectors work and what they can and cannot detect. Students will be able to go outside and find treasures buried beneath the soil. You never know what we are going to find! We will go outside every day unless it is raining. Please dress warm if it's cold outside.
Access to Adventure Learning - R1
