Middle School Literature for Reluctant Readers

This literature course will use short and non-traditional literature sources to teach students about the elements, genres, forms, and interpretation of literature. Please Note: Lunch is required for all who have 2nd & 3rd period classes. Please add the correct lunch to your cart before checking out. Reading Comprehension

Ages: 7 - 10
Depending on the pace/comfort of the class, we will cover several reading comprehension topics, including, but not limited to, some of the following: introduction to genres and different approaches to reading/reading with a purpose; fiction or nonfiction, how to tell the difference; text features of non-fiction; main idea vs. supporting details of a text; identifying and using time, sequence, and cause/effect language; predicting; retelling; identifying story elements such as characters, setting, plot; comparing and/or contrasting two or more texts written on the same topic; using graphic organizers; and facts vs. opinions. Good reading habits will be encouraged throughout our time together. Students should be able to read on at least a 2nd-grade level and be able to write or type a summarizing sentence or up to two short responses to questions presented about the passage that was read within 5 minutes, as well as be able to respond orally with at least short answers to presented questions during discussion. There will be homework.

Stem Stories - Nature Explorers

Ages: 7 - 10
In this class we will read stories about the bugs and critters in our environment. We will go outside and look for bugs and critters and keep a nature journal to document who lives in the ecosystem. We will also do some fun critter crafts!!

We will have supervised lunches for students who are on campus between 2nd and 3rd period. Students are expected to bring their lunches. Please remember, we are a nut-free facility. On the last week of each month, we will offer pre-ordered pizza delivery for a small fee.

Adventure Theater

Ages: 7 - 10
In this class we are using a method called "process drama" to create an adventure to a magical land. We will be using an adventure story as a launching point. The students and I will use our imaginations to develop the world of our story. It's a fun class that encourages creativity and play.
Creative Expressions: Art Beyond Boundaries

Ages: 10 - 18
This class offers a fresh and dynamic approach that goes beyond traditional art lessons. Students will explore fundamental concepts and techniques in art and design while learning to express their ideas creatively and confidently. Through collaborative projects that incorporate a variety of media and connect with other subjects, students will engage in diverse and innovative creative experiences. The course is designed to expand their perspectives, encourage imaginative thinking, and help each student discover and develop their unique artistic voice. All that’s required is an open mind and a willingness to explore.
Introduction to Astronomy

This engaging astronomy class introduces students to the wonders of space and the universe. Students will learn about the solar system, stars, planets, light, and the structure of the universe. Through hands-on labs and modeling activities, students will explore concepts like moon phases, gravity, and how light travels. The course emphasizes scientific thinking and observation, helping students understand how scientists study space. Activities may include building models, tracking celestial patterns, and simple experiments. This class is perfect for students who are curious about space and enjoy interactive learning.
