Cooking Around the World - R2

Get ready for a culinary adventure around the world! In this class, young chefs will embark on a fun, hands-on journey to explore different cuisines from every corner of the globe. Each week, we’ll travel to a new country and discover its unique flavors, ingredients, and cooking techniques, all while learning how to make delicious dishes that can be recreated at home. Once our dish is complete, we will enjoy it together while we learn facts and history of our country of the week.

Digital Storytelling and Media Literacy - R2

This dynamic course empowers students to craft meaningful stories through digital media while developing critical skills in media literacy. Students explore how storytelling influences culture, shapes public opinion, and communicates complex ideas using video, audio, photography, and social media. Through hands-on learning, they practice scripting, storyboarding, filming, editing, and ethical media use while learning to evaluate credibility, recognize bias, and produce thoughtful, responsible content. Projects include short documentaries, podcasts, photo essays, and collaborative digital campaigns that raise awareness about personal or social issues. Using accessible tools such as iMovie, Audacity, Canva, and Storyboard That, students gain practical experience in video, audio, and graphic design production. The course blends creativity with critical analysis, offering a tech-forward pathway that builds communication skills, media fluency, and digital citizenship essential for today’s interconnected world.

Future Problem Solvers - Global Issues - R2

We are very excited to invite you to join us as we become part of the 50-year old Future Problem Solvers international community. This organization helps prepare young people from 4th through 12th grades to be ready for an unknown future through programs designed to educate and inspire creative critical thinking. These programs teach better communication and collaboration with an evidence-based 6-step problem-solving approach that focuses on real life problems and solutions. At the end of a year of learning, student teams will have the opportunity to use the skills they have learned to qualify for and compete in the NC Affiliate competition. Winners at the affiliate level will proceed to the competition at the International Conference held at a US college campus. More information can be found at fpspi.org.

What’s a zine? It’s more than just a mini magazine…it can be an amazing tool for self-expression, storytelling, and connection. In this class, specially created for our young zinesters, we’ll discuss the history of zines, explore all the different forms they can take, and, best of all, create our own zines every single week. Our focus will be on creativity, expression, and collaboration.
