This class offers a fresh and dynamic approach that goes beyond traditional art lessons. Students will explore fundamental concepts and techniques in art and design while learning to express their ideas creatively and confidently. Through collaborative projects that incorporate a variety of media and connect with other subjects, students will engage in diverse and innovative creative experiences. The course is designed to expand their perspectives, encourage imaginative thinking, and help each student discover and develop their unique artistic voice. All that’s required is an open mind and a willingness to explore.

Fictional Creature Design

How do we make up fantastical creatures for books and movies? How can we make our own? This class is all about creature creation and how to draw/design new and intriguing beasts! Students will study real life animals, artistic interpretations of animal evolution, and different media that has taken creature and alien designing to the next level. Students will come up with their own designs based on games, prompts, and projects in order to grow their skills as artists and designers.

Students will learn, practice and strengthen fundamental topics such as Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. We will also delve into one, two and three dimensional Geometry concepts of Perimeter, Area, Surface Area and Volume. As time allows, I hope to cover ratios, proportions, probability and more.

Talons and Tails: Fursuit Head Bases

Talons and Tails: Fursuit Head Bases is a class dedicated to creating a base of a mascot costume's head out of a variety of materials. The aim of this class is to explore creating animal based designs, creating accompanying patterns, and carving foam to bring them into a 3D space. Students will be tasked to draft patterns that can be transferred to the various materials provided. They will most commonly use upholstery foam, EVA foam, and hot glue to create the base itself. A variety of different scissors will be utilized to carve shapes to create a 3D wearable sculpture.

Concept Art for Video Games

From Sonic to Splatoon to Minecraft, learn how to make concept art for the games you love or ones you want to create! Students will learn and explore different ways artists have created the concept art and built the worlds their favorite games exist in, including designing characters, backgrounds, and more! We will be working mostly traditionally, as well as exploring clay sculpting.

From Paragraphs to Essays: Expanding Strong Writing Foundations

In this engaging class, students will embark on a transformative journey from crafting strong paragraphs to composing well-structured three-paragraph essays. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, learners will explore the essential elements of essay writing, including thesis statements, topic sentences, supporting details, and effective conclusions. Students will participate in peer reviews and workshops that foster collaboration and constructive feedback, enabling them to refine their writing skills. The goal, by the end of the course, is to have each student able to confidently articulate their ideas in a cohesive essay format, setting a solid foundation for future writing endeavors. Students need to already know how to form a strong paragraph and be ready or almost ready for essay writing. There will be homework and access to a computer and Google account at home will be necessary. Students will have the use of computers/Chromebooks in class. ELA 2 prior to or with this class would be beneficial to the students and is strongly encouraged.

Future Problem Solving

This class will focus on learning and putting into practice the 6-step problem solving methodology of Future Problem Solving Program International. Students may choose to compete in the FPSPI competitions. The competition preparation team will meet separately as an after-class club; class enrollment is required to participate in the competition team. Competitions are for teams or individuals. THE will have competitors for middle and/or senior levels (based on age) in global issues and/or creative writing.
